ROSH HASHANAH 2016

The Threshold of Life

Sunday 2nd October, 17.45 RTE One

The most significant event in any young Jewish person’s life is their Bar -or, for girls, Bat – Mitzvah. This important ceremony marks the transition from childhood to adulthood, usually taking place at the age of twelve for a girl and thirteen for a boy. It is a time of great celebration and joy, but it can also be daunting, as young Jews say goodbye to many aspects of childhood and take on the responsibilities of adulthood. They are also expected to gain a full understanding of Jewish law and traditions, to enable them to participate fully in community life.

To mark the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, The Threshold of Life offers a snapshot of three young Dublin Jews, Joshua Boyle, Sarah Nelkin and Josh Barling, as they prepare with their families and mentors for the big day. We gain a unique insight into the study and preparation that is required of them for the ceremony. They also share their own thoughts, hopes and fears as they prepare to come of age in their faith and community.
