Episode 2: Winter

Winter has come to Trinity. The students have settled in to their new academic year and Christmas is just around the corner.

The festive lights are up in Dublin city centre, and Trinity College’s youngest resident is starting to think about her holiday plans. Jaelynne lives on campus with her sister Jordanne, and their mother, student union president Lynn Ruane. This year is the first time they’ve been away from Tallaght in the run up to Christmas.

While the rest of the campus sleeps, the Senior Ladies Rowing Crew must brave the early morning elements. . The annual Colours clash with city rivals UCD is on the horizon. For Sally O’Brien and her teammates the punishing schedule and conditions are just an occupational hazard.

Likewise for Trinity’s hurling team. The spectacle of Gaelic Games is scarce around these parts, but hurling twins Fionn and Cian Ó Riain Broin have always stood out from the crowd. Now they have their eyes set on the cementing Trinity hurling’s place on the national stage.

In the heart of the campus, the Library has many jewels in its crown – the Book of Kells and The Long Room are two. Pilgrims have travelled the world to see Trinity’s treasures – none from much further away than Japanese Book of Kells enthusiast Misae Higawara.

The Library also holds a world-famous collection of manuscripts – some of which can be up to 1500 years old. These priceless relics are kept alive by the meticulous and pain-staking work of the book conservation team.

Nestled away in the Zoology building on the far end of the campus is another collection of Trinity’s treasures – less celebrated maybe, but no less cherished. The Zoological Museum and its contents may have been lost forever, if it hadn’t been for the intervention of Dr. Martyn Linnie and his son Conor.

In the Genetics lab, Dr Matthew Campbell is hopeful that his work can help unlock the mysteries of the brain, and potentially have a much more far-reaching impact. His research team examines the vasculature of the human brain to determine any predisposition to injury.
