Series two tells the stories of people who have personal experiences of war, violence and political oppression; those who have lived through the conflict, or who have experienced its impact.
Voices‘ creator and producer, Evelyn McClafferty has worked in radio for more than ten years as a journalist and programme-maker. Of Series two, Evelyn said: “I’ve always been interested in the complexities of war and saddened by its impacts; the injustices and hardship experienced by people. I wanted to try and better understand circumstances in both current and former conflict areas by hearing of people’s personal experiences of these regions. I was also keen to hear from people who’ve been the victims of political oppression. So there’s a theme running through this second series and it’s produced differently to the first series, but I hope listeners will find the episodes a compelling listen.”
The first series of Voices was awarded Best Radio Current Affairs Documentary at the Association for International Broadcasting Awards in London, competing with entries from international broadcasters, including the BBC World Service and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. The awards were decided by judges from across the broadcasting world, including CNN, BBC, Vice, Bloomberg, Sky and the Financial Times.
Series one of Voices featured personal stories on suicide, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), abortion, addiction, obesity, direct provision, the rights of unmarried fathers and a wide range of other issues. The episodes are available to listen back to now on http://www.rte.ie/voices/
