RTÉ One is to mark the Muslim holy month of Ramadan with a series of weekly, high profile Ramadan Diaries, in which, just before the 6.01 News, four Muslims living in Ireland share their stories and their faith in a series of short films.

“When the month of Ramadan begins, the gates of the heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained.” – Sahih Bukhari, Hadith on Ramadan

Programme 3

Up and coming Bohemians winger and Tunisian national team target, Ayman Ben Mohamed, plays League of Ireland football while fasting from both food and drink during Ramadan’s daylight hours. With an Irish mother and Tunisian father, Ayman Ben Mohamed could qualify to play for either country, but it is the Tunisian Football Association which has recently staked its claim to this exciting young attacking talent, inviting him on to the national squad. Having played with UCD and Longford in the past, this is his second season with Bohemians and, as one of their most visibly gifted players, he has quickly established himself as a fans’ favourite. With Ramadan falling in June-July this year, Ayman faces the daunting challenge of training and playing while fasting completely for almost 18 hours a day. He will rely on the strength of his faith and the vocal support of the Bo’s fans to sustain him, to ensure that he doesn’t let the side down while remaining true to his beliefs.
