Monday 20th June 2016 at 5pm – Reluctant Surrender

On Easter Monday 1916, the Irish Volunteers along with the Irish Citizen Army, assembled at various prearranged meeting points in Dublin, and before noon set out to occupy a number of imposing buildings in the inner city area. These had been selected to command the main routes into the capital, and also because of their strategic position in relation to the major military barracks. They included the GPO, the Four Courts, Jacob’s Factory, Boland’s Mill, the South Dublin Union, St. Stephen’s Green and later the College of Surgeons.

Boland’s Mill located in Dublin’s Grand Canal Dock played an integral part in the 1916 Rising, when it was occupied by republicans led by Eamon De Valera. This documentary from 1971 features remarkable first-hand accounts of those involved in the rebellion.

Contains memories and contrinutions from surviving participants including Simon Donnelly, Joe O’Byrne, Sean Mac Mahon, and Joe O’Connor.

Produced and presented by Donncha O’Dulaing.

First broadcast 3rd April, 1972.
