RTÉ will deliver comprehensive coverage of Budget 2016 on Tuesday 13th October with extensive reporting and analysis across television, radio, online and mobile.
Television coverage of Budget 2016 begins on RTÉ One at 1.35pm as Bryan Dobson and Keelin Shanley present live coverage and analysis of the Budget speeches by the Minister for Finance, Michael Noonan TD and the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Brendan Howlin TD, right through the afternoon. Nuacht RTÉ will follow directly on RTÉ One at 5.45pm, while live coverage of Dáil Éireann featuring responses from the opposition will continue on RTÉ2 between 3.15pm and 6.30pm
RTÉ News Now will simulcast the budget coverage on RTÉ One throughout the day as well as providing a concise, easy-to-view guide to the key political and economic decisions.
Drivetime’s coverage of Budget 2016, presented by Mary Wilson, will begin at the earlier time of 1.55pm on RTÉ Radio 1, and will feature the live broadcast of the Budget speeches. Mary will interview Ministers Brendan Howlin and Michael Noonan, fresh from the Budget debate in Dáil Éireann. Mary will also speak to representatives of the main political parties, as they outline their responses to Budget 2016. RTÉ’s Brian Dowling will also be on-hand with political analysis, as the coalition bids for re-election.
Drivetime’s team of analysts will assess the impact of the Budget changes on you and your family. Mary will be joined in studio Joe Tynan, Head of Tax at PwC, Dr Sheila Killian, Assistant Dean of Research, Kemmy Business School at the University of Limerick, taxation lawyer Suzanne Kelly and Dr Theresa Reidy, lecturer in the Department of Government at University College Cork. The Drivetime team will also report from locations around the country. Fergal Keane will be on Kildare Street in Dublin, meeting representatives of the community and voluntary sector. Brian Lally will be speaking to individuals and small business owners in Waterford City. While Donal O’Herlihy and Jill Kerby will highlight how the measures in Budget 2016 impact on one typical, low-income household. Philip Boucher-Hayes will be playing Election Budget Bingo, as he monitors the Budget speeches for pre-election give-aways. Barry Lenihan will be monitors the buzz on social media, on-line news and the Drivetime text line for reaction to the Budget. And comedian Colm O’Regan will cast a wry-eye across the contents of Budget 2016, in a special radio column for Drivetime.
RTÉ.ie will provide comprehensive online coverage and analysis including full Budget detail and reaction. RTÉ’s news tracker will chart each development on this key day for every Irish household and business. The RTÉ News Now App will feature all the main text in English and as Gaeilge, along with audio and video output while live streams from all of RTÉ’s television and radio coverage will also be available worldwide to users via the RTÉ Player and RTÉ Radio Player.
RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta’s Lá na Cáinaisnéise will come live from Leinster House from 3:40 pm on Tuesday. A panel of speakers, to include tax consultant Ciarán Ó Feinneadha, journalist Áine Ní Chiaráin, financial expert Conall Ó Móráin, and former Minister for Finance Alan Dukes will offer their analysis of Budget 2016 on the programme, presented by Gormfhlaith Ní Thuairisg. Representatives of the country’s various political parties will also contribute their opinions of the budget during the show, which will run until 6.00 pm.
The Six-One News with Bryan Dobson and Sharon Ni Bheolain will be extended until 7.30pm with a comprehensive look at the Budget, an interview with Minister Noonan live from Leinster House and analysis from RTÉ correspondents along with reaction from politicians. Later in the evening there will be also be budget news and reaction on the Nine O’Clock News with Eileen Dunne along with an interview with An Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD.
Prime Time will feature a Budget Special at 9.40pm presented by Miriam O’Callaghan and David McCullagh. The programme will feature a debate between Minister for Finance Michael Noonan TD and Fianna Fail’s Finance spokesman, Michael McGrath TD, along with reaction and contributions from other politicians, interest groups and members of the audience.
On RTÉ Radio 1 from 10pm, Fergal Keane presents The Late Debate and will be reviewing all of the details of Budget 2016 with reaction and analysis from across the political spectrum.
On Wednesday morning at 10am Today with Sean O’Rourke will air a post-Budget special as Ministers Brendan Howlin TD and Michael Noonan TD join Sean O’Rourke in studio for a live phone-in. The public will get the opportunity to pose questions to both Ministers Michael Noonan and Brendan Howlin about how the budget affects them.
