Divining, in general terms, is the art of finding hidden things.

Divining was used in ancient times by the Egyptians, Hebrews, Persians, Druids, Greeks, Romans, Hindus and the American Indians.

The art of water divining has been used for thousands of years to find wells, springs and other water sources.

But how does divining work? Some theorise there is a psychic connection established between the diviner and the sought object. All things, living and inanimate, the theory suggests, possess an energy force. The diviner, by concentrating on the hidden object, is somehow able to tune in to the energy force or “vibration” of the object which, in turn, forces the divining rod or stick to move. The divining tool may act as a kind of amplifier or antenna for tuning into the energy.

A rural tradition in Ireland, the mechanics have changed very little over the years. Diviners traditionally use V-shaped hazel or metal rods to find water sources underground, with many having the ancient tradition passed down to them through the generations.
