RTE One & RTE2 Top the Christmas Television Ratings

 

RTÉ One and RTÉ2 were the number 1 and 2 channels this Christmas on Irish Television with Mrs Browns Boys Christmas Special proving to be the most watched show on Christmas Day for the 4th year running.

Television continues to play a central part in Irish people’s festive celebrations with the average person watching 4 hours and 39 minutes of television on Christmas Day alone. RTE One and RTE2 delivered 17 of the top 20 shows on Irish Television on Christmas day while RTÉ Jr was the Number 1 children’s channel for 4-7 year olds for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.*

Mrs Brown’s Boys Christmas Special was once again the most watched programme on Christmas day with 703,100 viewers. The highest rating movie on Christmas Day was Argo with 336,000 viewers on RTÉ One followed by Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted, with 304,000 viewers also on RTÉ One.  Meanwhile the Fair City one-hour special also proved hugely popular with 343,000 tuning into see Claudia Carroll return to Carrigstown and rekindle her romance with Paul.

On RTE2 Harry Potter and the Philosophers’ Stone was the most popular film of the day with over 200,000 viewers, while 111,000 viewers watched a new series of Una’s Dream Ticket which sees Una Foden from The Saturday’s make children’s dreams come true.

On Christmas Eve the Six-One news was the most watched programme on the day with 387,000 viewers. Comedy on RTÉ2 was particularly popular on the day with Father Ted’s Christmas Special proving to be the 3rd most watched show with 274,000 viewers while Mario Rosenstocks Christmas Special  also performed well with 265,000 viewers

RTÉ2 was also the Number 1 Channel for Adults 15-34s on Christmas Eve, The highest-rating programmes of the day across all channels for Adults 15-34 was the film Happy Feet with average share of 24%*.

On Stephen’s Day, the Six-One news and Nine-O’Clock news on RTE One both drew in over 389,000 viewers while Skyfall was the most popular movie of the day with 329,000 viewers on RTÉ One.
