LOVE/HATE SERIES 5, EPISODE FOUR
Synopsis
Elmo sells the majority of the drugs shipment on and the operation is considered to be a success: Nidge’s thoughts turn to the next deal. Having discovered that Nadine is having an affair with Scotty, Nidge – always alert to human weakness – hits on the idea of using Scotty as the driver for the next run. He also visits Noely Hughes and tells him about Fran desecrating his mother’s grave, thus setting Noely off intending to try and kill Fran.
Finally he tasks Ado with another attempt on Patrick’s life. Ado’s idea to get to Patrick is to use one of his own, and he tracks down born-again recovering addict traveller Packy – Packy has a drug debt to the gang and Ado extorts him into carrying out the hit. It goes tragically wrong as Patrick is unscathed but his son Brandon is hit in the head. Miraculously the little boy survives, but Nidge knows that his own family is fair game to his enemy now, and he and his family have to leave the house and flee for refuge. Packy, captured by the travellers after the hit, is taken to a lonely scrap yard where Patrick cuts his throat. Siobhan meanwhile is increasingly conflicted. Her mission to feed information back to Moynihan progresses, she is able to tell him about the secret rendezvous point at the zoo. Also she corners Dean when he is out of his head on pills gets him to tell her about Git Loughman’s finger bone which Fran keeps as an unholy relic. But she is falling in love with Pauley, and when Siobhan is told that Tommy will soon recover from his coma she decides that she isn’t going to go back to him. Pauley is under pressure – he spots police surveillance at the zoo rendezvous and realises that there is a rat in the camp. (In fact there is more than one, for Moynihan reveals to Ciaran that he has an undercover officer placed into Nidge’s gang – none other than Scotty!) Pauley proposes marriage to Siobhan and she is about to accept – but then she makes a terrible mistake and mentions him having been to the zoo. Pauley immediately realises that something is wrong and confronts her – cornered and panicked, terrified Siobhan pushes him off her apartment balcony to his death.
Q&A with Johnny Ward who plays Pauley
1. How did you feel when you read the script describing Pauley’s death?
I was absolutely devastated because I was having such a good time in Love/Hate and had made so many new friends. It was always in the back of my mind that I could get killed off as Pauley was tredding on thin ice but I honestly thought that Tommy was going to wake up and kill me. Not Siobhan!
2. How did you prepare for the scene?
Myself and Charlie (Siobhan)were both very surprised that I got killed off but the two of us wanted it to look as realistic and as believable as possible so each day building up to the scene we would practice it over and over until both of us were happy
3. What will you miss most about Love/Hate?
The laughs, the banter and the craic of course but also knowing that I am no longer part of the biggest series ever to come out of this country.
4. What was your favourite scene during your time on L/H?
Robbing the motor bike and the shooting scene with Patrick!I have been driving bikes since the age of 16 but never had I played a character that used one so it was great craic even though I almost crashed it twice!
5. Did you enjoy playing the character of Pauley?
It was an amazing experience. It was one of the most exciting but also intimidating roles that I have ever had to take on. I was excited because I knew I was going to be on the biggest series on Irish television but also extremely intimidated as all the other cast members all knew each other from before and I was worried that I might not gel in to the Love/Hate family. However they made me feel so welcome and made me look forward to going in each day.
6. What’s up next for you as an actor?
At the moment I am playing the part of “Sully” in Rebecca Daley’s newest film “Mammal” which stars Rachel Griffith and also Barry Keoghan from season 4 of Love/Hate. We are halfway through shooting it already and will be going off to Luxembourg for the final scenes. Then I swap my guns for tights and take on the role of Peter Pan in this year’s Gaiety pantomime. I think for any actor it is important to be versatile so I am really looking forward to getting back on to the Gaiety stage
