Overview
Claire Randall, an English combat nurse from 1945, is on a second honeymoon in Scotland with her husband, Frank, immediately following the end of World War II. While exploring the local flora at a stone circle called Craigh Na Dun, Claire is magically transported back in time to 1743. There, she immediately encounters a British redcoat – and a bloodthirsty ancestor of Frank’s – by the name of Jack Randall. He attempts to rape her, but not before a swarthy Scot named Murtagh knocks him out and drags her to an old cottage where his companions await. She may have escaped one captor, but now she’s faced with many more: a clan of Scots including Dougal, Rupert, Angus and an injured young man named Jamie. Claire is now considered a mysterious stranger in this dangerous and unknown land, and they will not let her out of their sight. After she tends to Jamie’s shoulder, they kidnap her and sweep her across the Scottish Highlands on horseback. The episode ends with their arrival at Castle Leoch and the impression that Claire’s journey has only just begun.
