Series 5, Episode 2 Synopsis
Nidge is back in business. He and Pauley shake off their habitual police surveillance and attend a secret meeting near Dublin Zoo with Terence’s haulier contact Brendan (Paul Ronan) and arrangements are made for the first shipment under the new deal (next time Nidge is to provide his own driver). At the same time Pauley agrees with Nidge that, after the disastrous sit down with Patrick, the traveller will have to be killed. Pauley agrees to do the job himself. But Patrick is expecting trouble and is ready for him: he and his crew set a pub car park ambush for Pauley who barely escapes with his life. (Photos attached)
Moynihan is still receiving information from Siobhan, who is now in a relationship with Pauley. Moynihan is frustrated with his superiors in the Gardai who seem to be primarily interested in arresting large numbers of drug users which looks good on the spreadsheets, but Moynihan cannot get funding for the overtime and resources needed to bring down Nidge – his position is weakened by the failure to catch the gang last time. Depressed and frustrated, Moynihan attends Andrew’s (the dentist from series 4) funeral.
Meanwhile Fran – who of course doesn’t know the reason for the feud between Nidge and Patrick – off his own bat decides that he will try and play diplomat. He goes to see Patrick to ask what it’s all about and Patrick sees an opportunity and tells Fran the truth: that Nidge tried to kill him because Patrick is the only other person alive who knows that it was Nidge who threw the pipe bomb that maimed Fran’s wife Linda all those years ago in John Boy’s time. (Photos attached) Fran freaks out and decides to kill Nidge right away – and Patrick is keen to encourage him, even supplying a gun. However that handover is witnessed by Detective Ciaran, following Fran on routine surveillance. As Fran heads into town fully intent on murdering Nidge, Ciaran bravely stops and arrests him at the Port Tunnel toll booths. (No photos available) Fran will go to prison for possession of a hand gun – but Nidge is under no illusions that the threat presented by Fran is over…
