ALMOST 8 OUT OF 10 TV VIEWERS IN IRELAND HAVE TUNED INTO RTÉ TWO’S

FIFA WORLD CUP COVERAGE TO DATE

 

 

Over 3.2 million (77%) people in Ireland have seen some of the World Cup coverage on RTÉ Two television, meaning that almost 8 out of 10 Irish viewers tuned in at some stage to the event.*

 

An average of 293,900 viewers have watched each game so far. This is 30% higher than the equivalent figure for South Africa 2010.**

 

In addition to huge audiences for RTÉ Sport’s World Cup coverage on RTÉ Two, views online for the tournament on RTÉ Player have already exceeded 1.7 million**** with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final still to come. RTÉ’s World Cup website received some 4 million page impressions.

 

RTÉ’s coverage of the Group Stage and Round of 16 from the 2014 FIFA World Cup has proved a massive hit with television audiences in Ireland, with almost 8 out of 10 viewers tuning in at some stage.* An average of 293,900 viewers have watched each game from Brazil which is 30% higher than the same figure for the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa.**

 

England’s Group D defeat at the hands of a Luiz Suarez-inspired Uruguay on Thursday 19 June has proved the most popular game so far with audiences, averaging 572,400 viewers. At one stage during the match, the audience peaked at 815,900 viewers.***

 

Coverage continues this evening on RTÉ Two and RTÉ.ie with the first two quarter finals as Darragh Maloney is joined by Brad Friedel, Neil Lennon and Ronnie Whelan for France v Germany (KO 5.00pm, followed by  Bill O’Herlihy with panel  Eamon Dunphy, John Giles and Liam Brady as hosts Brazil take on Colombia (KO 9.00pm).

 

The biggest day for online viewing so far was Tuesday 1 July with 140,000**** live streams between both Round of 16 games on that day– Argentina v Switzerland and Belgium v USA.

RTÉ’s dedicated World Cup site has also proved hugely engaging for fans with over 4 million page impressions across RTÉ.ie/worldcup and the World Cup section on RTÉ News Now.
