Movie Screening: The Wizard of Oz
RTÉ Concert Orchestra
John Wilson conductor
Saturday 14 December, 3.30pm & 7.30pm
National Concert Hall

Back by popular demand – a screening of The Wizard of Oz complete with original dialogue and singing accompanied by a live performance of the orchestral score by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. This MGM family favourite is packed with images, characters, lines and songs that resonate with us all – the Yellow Brick Road, Dorothy and Toto, Over the Rainbow, ‘There’s no place like home…’

Conducting the RTÉ CO will be the man that ‘rescued’ The Wizard of Oz. The physical score was just one of the classics destroyed by MGM in a clearout in 1969 – it actually ended up being used as landfill for a golf course!  So the written music for The Wizard of Oz, which is regularly voted the greatest soundtrack of all time, was lost, until John Wilson and a colleague spent six months painstakingly transcribing and orchestrating the soundtrack note by note. Wilson  has  likened the task as doing a million-piece jigsaw, but it has been so successful that MGM went on to engage him to reconstruct their other lost treasures.

Join John Wilson and the RTÉ CO this Christmas for the ultimate way to experience one of the all-time classic films.

Please note start times: 3.30pm & 7.30pm

Tickets: €25–€35 (conc. €23–€33)
