EPISODE THREE

Billing

As little Warren’s first Holy Communion approaches, things seem to be on the up for Nidge as dentist Andrew capitulates and asks to be cut into the deal that he is putting together.  But the gang threatens to implode as Fran – unimpressed by the gang’s dodgy lawyer’s assurances that he is safe from prosecution over the tiger kidnapping – lashes out looking for someone to blame, resulting in a serious challenge to Nidge’s authority.

Synopsis

As Warren’s first Holy Communion approaches, Nidge is edgy and fearful – certain that a threat hangs over him but unable to see what it is.  Wayne and Lizzie are temporarily thrown off the scent, but Moynihan and his cops are quietly working away in the background.  Elmo – victim of Detectives Ciaran, Gavin and Terry’s “Elmo Is A Rat” graffiti – is benched while Nidge tries to figure out if he can trust him or not.

Tommy is released on bail, and Siobhan is worried when she learns that he was admitted to hospital for a terrible headache and bleeding from the ear.  Fran – unconvinced by the assurances of Nidge’s lawyer Dave that he is safe from prosecution over the robbery because Tommy’s testimony cannot be used – decides to take matters into his own hands and resolves to take Tommy up to the yard and kill him.  Siobhan sees him get in the van with Fran and, terrified, begs Nidge to intervene.  Nidge calls Fran, about to clip Tommy, and pleads with him to let Tommy live.  Fran reluctantly agrees, but both know that there has been a power shift here and nothing between them will be the same again.

Ado – responsible now for overseeing Debbie’s drug mule runs off the ferry – discovers that his girlfriend Nadine is pregnant after fraudulently trying to use her urine to pass a drug test at his methadone clinic.  Meanwhile the dentist Andrew – unable to make his alimony and school fee payments, and miserable at his estrangement from his family – decides to try and turn his relationship with Nidge around.  He offers to cooperate fully and arrange all the paperwork if Nidge will cut him into the deal as an active partner.  This is, of course, the moment Nidge has been waiting for and the Faustian pact is struck.  With Tommy saved and Andrew dancing to his tune, things are looking up for Nidge…  until, on the way home from the Holy Communion, he gets the news that his mother has died in hospital from her stroke.

Tom Vaughan-Lawlor on the impact of Nidge’s mother dying:

The mother figure dying is huge. You never see what happened to his father but I don’t think the father’s been around. So it’s a massive threshold , a rite of passage, death of a parent and all that symbolises – so it’s a huge moment in his life but I think he forces it down – “right on we go” – like the death of Darren. He doesn’t make reference to it… “Ok, straight ahead” – repression I think.

Caoilfhionn Dunne on Lizzie’s moral compass:

Personally I think the reason she doesn’t go after Nidge at his mother’s funeral despite the brilliant opportunity that she has is her own sense of morality, she’s not willing to go that low, she’s not willing to sink – as she sees it – to their level. There was this clear separation made – with people like Git and Dano and even Tony in season 3 about the difference between us and them and I think Lizzie still holds on to that. In her eyes they’re scum, we have a cause and she in herself now – separate from the political cause – has a personal cause.

I think her confidence to a certain extent she’s already taken one out, in her eyes “I can get the other one I don’t have to resort to going to someone’s funeral.” Also being so close to losing two family members herself and in the ways they died and what she’s seen over the last year and how low these people will stoop. There are no rules and there are no limits, for her – no, there is a line and people’s families are the line because somebody stepped all over her family and took that from her so she’s not going to go there with other people.
