In episode 2 Fran loses 2 teeth during a brawl in the toilets of a pub.
Unfortunately, as I explained earlier in the week, I am limited in terms of photography available for episode 2. If you want to take grabs of the fight scene it’s approx 33 minutes into tonight’s episode – so should be on screens around 10:05pm.
Below please find an episode synopsis and also a quote from actor Peter Coonan as to how they achieved the toothless effect.
EPISODE 2 SYNOPSIS
Logline
Nidge extorts his tame dentist into cooperating with him… unaware that DI Moynihan is setting up a complex undercover operation to track Nidge and ultimately bring him down…
Billing (Tease)
As the gang members are arrested and shaken down by the cops after the botched tiger kidnapping, Fran’s name comes into the frame. Meanwhile, Nidge and Fran work on extorting their tame dentist into cooperating with them in planning a major drugs importation. Unknown to them, however, DI Moynihan is planning an operation of his own, setting up a complex undercover policing operation to track Nidge and ultimately bring him down…
Synopsis (Full)
The vulnerable and childlike Tommy is wrongfooted under interview by the police and gives up Fran’s name. Nidge’s dodgy lawyer Dave reckons that Tommy – clearly not really right – should not have been interviewed without representation and thinks Fran will not have any trouble. But Fran is increasingly angry about erratic Tommy’s actions on the job and it’s all Nidge can do to calm him down. Fran’s mood is not improved by an unexpected and brutal bar fight with cuckolded husband Noely which leaves Fran with two teeth knocked out.
Meanwhile Nidge’s paranoia is slowly building – he’s constantly changing his routine, swapping cars and staying in different places from night to night. He’s rarely at home, and often stays at the brothel (where he has embarked on an affair with its manageress Janet). He has good reason to be worried, for Detective Inspector Moynihan now has Nidge in his sights. Sympathetic to Tommy whose essential innocence he recognises, Moynihan determines that he is going to bring Nidge down. He puts together his team of secret undercover operatives – including old hands detectives Ciaran and Gav as well as bringing the disgruntled Terry into the fold – and sets about employing an array of complex surveillance, mind games and dirty tricks against his target. Their first move is against Elmo: Ciaran arranges for him to be released without charge for possession of drugs found on him at his arrest, and subsequently he and the lads graffiti his estate with the words “Elmo Is A Rat” – all calculated to encourage mistrust and conflict within the gang.
Nidge meanwhile is thrown by the news that his mother has been hospitalised with a stroke. He struggles to stay focused on his new plan to use the dentist Andrew as cover for a major drugs importation. He and Fran play good cop and bad cop to bully him into agreeing to let them use his warehouse premises for the haul. Andrew – insolvent and estranged from his wife – has no choice but to agree.
PETER COONAN QUOTE
“Yeah so I lose the teeth during the fight. He puts my teeth against the wall, smashes them actually against the toilet bowl but yeah there was no real tricks needed, camera tricks or make up tricks. I had an incident when I was younger and I fell, had an accident and smashed my teeth so I’ve had a denture.
On the first film – the reason I got the part on this – I worked on was called “Between the Canals” I had my teeth out and Stuart (Carolan – writer) Caffo (David Caffrey – director) and Maureen (Hughes – casting director) saw a clip of it and that’s how I got the audition for Fran.
I knew that cos Stuart and Caffo were such big fans of the film that I knew that they were waiting – it was only a matter of time, for every script for every season I was like “When is it coming?” And then I saw the teeth (in episode 2)
This year Fran’s a bit different, the hair is different –I was kinda like ah do they have to do the teeth? But I mean it’s one of those things – I won’t have it for long because I’m going to get them fixed so may as well utilize it you know?”
