Episode 1 Synopsis
Dublin gang boss Nidge has been blooded and proved his mettle. He has shown he has the necessary ruthlessness to get to the top. He has killed friend and foe to become King – but the throne is a lonely dark place. Series 4 begins with Nidge and the gang trying to survive in the endless recession that dogs the rotten Republic. Nidge is haunted by the death of Darren and dogged by irrational fears for his safety – when he sees Detective Terry moonlighting as a bouncer he is convinced the demoted cop is keeping him under surveillance, and orders his muscle Chunk to keep a watch on Terry’s house. Elsewhere Nidge’s old dissident enemy Dano has put out a contract on him with revenge-fuelled Lizzie and teenage assassin Wayne.
Forced to diversify the business, Nidge and Fran have planned a daring armed robbery – the tiger kidnapping of the family of a security van driver Peter Weldon. But when they find themselves a man down for the job, Nidge overrules Fran’s objections to Tommy being brought back for the operation. Tommy has survived the terrible brain injury inflicted on him last year, but there are signs that he is not fully recovered, his personality subtly – and critically – changed.
The heist goes ahead and they just about get away with the money. But Tommy – who has formed a strange bond with the van driver’s teenage daughter Kellie – who he was supposed to be guarding – screws everything up when bizarrely he returns to her house to see if she is all right. Tommy is arrested and questioned by the mysterious Detective Inspector Mick Moynihan: cool, steely, manipulative, he is the head of a semi-autonomous squad of secret undercover operatives. Unaware of this, meanwhile, Nidge has spotted an opportunity: a client who has fallen behind on his tab at the brothel. Andrew is a dentist wounded by the claws of the Celtic Tiger, his flagging business not pulling in enough to pay the mortgages, alimony and school fees. Nidge realises that a dental business is the perfect cover to import large quantities of drugs and begins to envisage the deal of a lifetime….
