“The greatest musical phenomenon since Mozart,” reckoned Pablo Casals of Romanian-born George Enescu.

Enescu studied in Paris with Fauré and Massenet. Like Mozart, this violinist, pianist, conductor and composer impressed from a very early age.

His own pupils included Yehudi Menuhin, who witnessed Enescu play Ravel’s violin sonata from memory, minutes after seeing it for the first time.

Enescu’s reputation as composer has steadily grown since his death in 1955 and, during the week of the anniversary of his birth, we’ll be broadcasting his string quartets, orchestral suites and piano works.
