SUMMER’S ALIVE ON RTÉ ONE & RTÉ TWO TELEVISION

RTÉ serves up a host of sizzling new series, welcome returns and big finales

to keep everyone entertained over the summer months

 

Summer is alive on RTÉ One and RTÉ Two Television with a schedule packed full of brand-new series, fascinating new documentaries, big drama, new and returning international hit series, grand finales and all the sporting action.  New series Celebrity MasterChef Ireland, The Fall and The Hit will join returning favouritesSaturday Night With Miriam, The Good Wife and The Rose of Tralee.  There will also be plenty of dramatic endings from the season finales of Revenge and Grey’s Anatomy to the All Ireland Football and Hurling Finals.

Right throughout the summer RTÉ Two will have a schedule full of entertaining new series. Nick Munier and Dylan McGrath are back at the helm for Celebrity MasterChef Ireland as eight well known faces vie to be the Celebrity MasterChef champion. And music fans will be kept entertained with brand new series, The Hit, a real music competition that gives fledgling songwriters a chance to have chart success with an established star.

Big new international summer series on RTÉ One and RTÉ Two include gripping psychological thriller The Fall, an RTÉ co-production with BBC, starring Emmy award-winning actor Gillian Anderson. The Americans, a period drama about the complex marriage of two KGB spies posing as Americans in suburban Washington D.C. and Suits is a new series revolving around Mike Ross, a brilliant college-dropout who finds himself a job working with one of New York City’s best lawyers. And Irish actor Gabriel Byrne stars in Quirke, another RTÉ co-production with BBC. Other ‘must-see’ new series include Longmire, Person of Interest, Go On and Vikings.

Documentary fans have a range of brand-new topical and absorbing documentaries to look forward to this summer.  A Tale of Two Trams takes a snapshot of the good, the bad and the future of Dublin’s light rail. She’s the Business follows four women entrepreneurs juggling recessionary times and family life and Right of Way focuses on how families with disabilities are planning to cope with the end of the government’s mobility allowance for the disabled. Junior Vets is a brand new six-part fly-on-the-wall series following the lives of junior veterinary students as they make their way through their last year of study at UCD.  In The Meaning of Life Bono gives a rare and revealing interview about the things, people and beliefs that give meaning to his life.

There’s more new factual programming this summer with Taking Care of Business, a new series featuring experienced chartered accountants Sean Dunne and Tommy Murphy on a mission to rescue Irish businesses, criss-crossing the country to help those with massive debt and struggling to survive.  Epic Walks is a brand new four-part series from RTÉ Cork, which follows four epic journeys which took place in Ireland across four centuries –from O’Sullivan Beara’s forced march to Thomas Carlyle’s tour around the famine stricken country in 1849. Grainne Seoige, John Creedon, Dáithí Ó Sé and Evelyn O’Rourke each take one of these journeys and learn not just about this beautiful island but also the fascinating history surrounding it. In Good Hands explores the life and work of traditional Irish craft-workers and how they’ve adapted to the demands of the modern world: from elite saddle-makers, iron workers and cobblers, to bespoke tailors, potters and artisan weavers.  Other documentary treats this summer include a one-off programme looking at Ireland’s relationship with Margaret Thatcher.

 

Children of all ages will be kept occupied across the summer holidays with two new programme strands, Reuben & Bó’s Beach-Hut and Pic-a-Story, joining all the RTÉjr favourites.

This summer on RTÉ One sees a host of returning hit series as Miriam O’Callaghan invites viewers to join her and her guests when Saturday Night with Miriam returns for a brand new season. The National Lottery’s popular gameshow The Big Money Game, presented by Brian Ormond and Sinead Kennedy, is also back for its popular summer run. Dáithí Ó Sé presents live from Tralee, where 32 Roses from all over the world will compete to be the crowned the 55th Rose of TraleeEurovision fans can soak up the atmosphere and cheer on Ryan Dolan when he represents Ireland in the biggest song contest in the world. For One Night Only Gay Byrne gets a special insight into the trials and tribulations of Boyzone. And Donal Skehan is back to whet viewers’ appetites with a new series of Kitchen Hero.

Drama on RTÉ One continues with Fair City as Paddy’s plan to regain his place at the head of his family takes a shocking turn when he reveals his darkest secret to Vivienne. Yvonne and Carol’s rivalry reaches epic proportions when Yvonne finds a way to ruin Carol’s life forever. Paul puts his neck on the line to save his new found son Callum following a car accident, and Leo does a deal with the devil in order to pay the bills.  And viewers will be treated to a host of favourite returning international dramas and comedies to RTÉ One and Two, including The Good Wife, Hell On Wheels, Criminal Minds, Blue Bloods, The Walking Dead, Suburgatory, CSI and Shameless. And the drama continues with big summer grand finales of hit series  Revenge and Grey’s Anatomy.

This summer will be action-packed for sports fans on RTÉ Two with coverage of a huge selection of top national, European and international events. All across the country county rivalries will be reignited with the return of the GAA Championships as The Sunday Game Live and The Sunday Game bring you 31 live games along with extensive highlights and analysis of the action right up to and including the 2013 All Ireland Football and Hurling Finals. RTÉ Two HD is set to bring soccer fans the biggest club game in the world with live high definition coverage of the Champions League Final between with Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. A feast of soccer action continues this summer with the FIFA Confederations Cup as RTÉ Two features coverage of all 16 matches across 10 days from Brazil, while on the home front there will be live coverage of the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup qualifier against the Faroe Islands, plus the best of the action from the Airtricity League continues with live fixtures and highlights on MNS. As the Rugby season climaxes RTÉ Two will present live coverage of the Rabodirect Pro12 Final.  RTÉ Sport will continue its extensive Irish racing coverage with live broadcasts from the Galway Festival, Irish Derby, Irish Oaks, and 2000 Guineas at the Curragh. In addition RTÉ Two will bring viewers live coverage of the Irish Open from Carton House, the best of the action and live coverage of the RDS Dublin Horse Show, the UEFA Super Cup and Greyhound Racing.

So no matter what the weather there’s lots to entertain this summer on RTÉ One and RTÉ Two.  Viewers will be able to stay connected with RTÉ’s great summer line-up no matter where they are.  Programmes will be available on mobile or online on RTÉ Player for up to 21 days after broadcast, with programmes appearing shortly after broadcast, so viewers will always be able to catch-up or watch back on the device of their choice where they want and when they want.  RTÉ Player is available online and via an App  on i-Phone, iPad, iPodTouch, and on PS3.
