Below please find details of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra’s summer concerts.
As part of the Music in High Definition series in August at the National Concert Hall, the RTÉ CO is delighted to present its first full concerts with top Irish artists Paul Brady (1 and 2 August) and Julie Feeney (9 August). We welcome back Allan Harris – ‘probably the most exciting young male singer on the scene’, Wall Street Journal – for a Nat ‘King’ Cole evening (23 August). The RTÉ CO’s popular film screenings with live orchestra continue with an evening of classic Rodgers & Hammerstein hits on the big screen, accompanied live (16 August). After the exhilarating Bee Gees and Abba sell-out concerts with Andy O’Callaghan and Celebration Singers, another all-singing all-dancing evening is promised with Disco Inferno (30 August, also in Cork Opera House, 31 August).
Ahead of that, sensational Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel joins the RTÉ CO for one night only, with a programme ranging from Puccini, Verdi, Gounod and Donizetti arias to ‘Mack the Knife’, Gilbert & Sullivan and ‘It ain’t necessarily so’ from Porgy and Bess (22 June).
The RTÉ Concert Orchestra Lunchtime Series opens appropriately with Fanfare for the Common Man. These Tuesday concerts promise a blitz of favourites – drawn from the worlds of classical, operatic, popular, films and musicals – all broadcast live on RTÉ lyric fm. Guests joining the RTÉ CO include soprano Cara O’Sullivan, mezzo Sharon Carty, pianist Ben Dawson, cellist William Butt, violinist (and RTÉ CO leader) Mia Cooper, and young Irish conductors Conor Palliser and Sinead Hayes.

Bryn Terfel concert, 22 June: this will feature the Goethe-Institut Choir and will be conducted by Gareth Jones; the full programme is now listed.

Composer, orchestrator and songwriter Julie Feeney won the Choice Music Prize for Album of the Year for her self-produced debut album, on which she played most of the instruments herself. Her latest album Clocks also nominated for the Choice Music Prize, went straight to No.1 in the Irish charts and was voted Irish Times Album of the Year 2012.
Her unquestionably original sound and her innovative, avant-garde approach, while rooted in classical music, straddle both the pop and theatrical worlds.
It’s about time that this ‘eccentric pop genius’ (Hot Press) shared a stage with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra.
This will be the intimate concert of the summer!
