Dún Briste is a sea stack rising out of the sea off Downpatrick Head in Co. Mayo. According to legend, St. Patrick separated it from the mainland in order to banish the pagan god Cromduff who then perished on the island.

In 1981, an expedition of archaelogists, a biologist and an RTE crew were the first humans to set foot on Dún Briste for about 600 years.

Producer Dick Warner and presenter Des Hickey record the helicopter trip to the sea stack as archaeologists survey the remains of a centuries-old longhouse to try to establish when it became an island.

First broadcast 21st March 1981.
