On 6 August, RTÉ Radio 1’s Documentary on One will celebrate a digital milestone by publishing its 1000th podcast online. To celebrate, RTÉ Radio 1 is broadcasting a special season of classic documentaries. The Classic Documentary on One Season began on Wednesday 18 July at 10pm will continue every Wednesday at the same time thereafter for eight weeks.
Launched in July 2009, the Documentary on One website (www.rte.ie/doconone) has gone on to receive more than seven million online activities between webpage visits and podcast downloads and the Documentary on One iPhone and Android apps have been downloaded in the tens of thousands. All of this digital activity has seen Documentary on One productions being enjoyed by listeners all over the world.
The breath of documentaries available has been brought about not just by the current radio documentaries, but the vast library of radio documentaries stored in the RTÉ Radio archives. Stretching back as far as 1954, the documentaries available from the Documentary on One website tell the story of Ireland over the past 50 or more years – socially, historically, politically and much else besides.
