Hubicka (The Kiss) by Bedrich Smetana
Hubicka is the story of Lukáš, a young farmer who eschews his true love Vendulka to take a bride recommended by his parents. When his wife dies, he hopes at last to marry Vendulka. She still loves him and agrees, but when he tries to kiss her she repulses him. Smetana’s portrayal of love, high principles, stubbornness and reconciliation was written in 1871 and received an overwhelming ovation at its first performance on the 7th of November 1876.
The cast in this new Czech language production is led by Jiri Pribyl, Peter Berger, Pavel Baransky, Eliska Weissova and the winner of the 2010 Veronica Dunne International Singing Contest, Pumeza Matshikiza.
