Yachts woman Joan Denvir, who recently passed away, was born in the early part of the last century. The daughter of a former sea captain, Joan grew up in Dublin and later the family moved to East Beach in Cobh where everyone sailed or spent time on the water in the early nineteen thirties. Marcus Connaughton recorded her recollections for Seascapes in her home in January. She recollects those early years sailing Cork Harbour One’s, being a woman in a male dominated sport, and sailing Cygnet alongside the legendary Kevin O’Regan.

Joan Denvir was Ireland’s first Lady Commodore of a sailing club, she talks about her maritime heroes, sailing throughout the Mediterranean and the Baltic, single handed sailing and she shares her stories of her friendship with the Nicholson family and how they began their yacht chartering business in Antigua.
