“We lived through history LIVE,” Paddy Scanlon says, and it sums up the extraordinary experience of those in Berlin on the night of 9 November 1989 – the night the Berlin Wall opened. Twenty years after that extraordinary event Martin Duffy, an Irish writer and film-maker living in Berlin since 2003, meets up with Irish people who have been living in West Berlin.

OPERA NIGHT: RECORDED LIVE AT WEXFORD FESTIVAL OPERA 2009
MARIA PADILLA BY GAETANO DONIZETTI presented by Bernard Clarke.
Power relations; family honour and tragedy. Written as a season-opener for La Scala, this is one of the neglected gems of Donizetti’s mature period, showing the composer at his most dramatic. First performed at the Teatro alla Scala Milan on the 26 December 1841.

The circus, an elephant stampede. Whipcracks, shouts, screams, trumpetings. A gunshot. Silence. A news report tells us that one of the elephants – Betty – was shot dead. Bob, Betty’s partner in the act, doesn’t know why Betty ran, doesn’t know she’s dead, doesn’t know what death is. Bob is a very innocent elephant. He also doesn’t know why he’s been put in a cage with Sultan. And so the adventure begins.

Despite the recession and the recording industry’s global meltdown, the Contemporary Music Centre in Dublin continues in the vanguard, continues to reach new heights: CMC presents new music::new Ireland, a series of two concerts exploring contemporary Irish music for violin and piano in King’s Place, London on the 12 October and 16 November. Nova trails forward and salutes the CMC.

This time thirty years ago, elections were held in the Gaeltacht to elect the first board members to Údarás na Gaeltachta, the Gaeltacht regional authority. In this documentary Pól Mac Donncha looks at the background to the establishment of the Údarás, how or whether it has fulfilled its purpose, and what future challenges it faces.

MOVIES AND MUSICALS
The one that started it all – Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs – the world’s first ever animation feature film is launching on Disney Blu-ray and on DVD and Aedín has copies to give away this evening. She also talks to Hollywood star and legendary dancer Marge Champion who was the first performer to assist animators in the creation of Snow White.

At only 21 she was plucked from music school, put into the recording studio and signed to Gary Barlow’s new record label. Camilla tells Marty how this all came about – which did involve Gary receiving numerous copies of a demo tape she’d made with a £2.99 backing track of Pie Jesu and Ave Maria!
