John Kelly is joined by writer-director Peter Sheridan and producer Bill Hughes to discuss a new film by Ricky Gervais, a new print exhibition at IMMA and John Banville’s new novel.
Film: The Invention of Lying by Ricky Gervais & Matthew Robinson
Billed as Ricky Gervais’ attempt to break America, his new comedy is set in a world where people can only tell the truth – until a writer, played by Gervais of course, invents the lie. An impressive cast includes Jason Bateman, Jennifer Garner (both from Juno), Christopher Guest (Spinal Tap, Best in Show), Tina Fey (Sarah Palin impersonator, 30 Rock) and Rob Lowe.
Book: The Infinities by John Banville
Zeus and Hermes take a keen interest in the affairs of man in John Banville’s first novel in his own name since his Man Booker-winning The Sea. In a new version of the myth of Amphitryon, Adam Godley’s kith and kin, one more dysfunctional than the next, gathers round while he lies dying at the family home.
Play: Buck Jones and the Bodysnatchers by Ken Bourke
Producer-director Joan Sheehy sets Ken Bourke’s lively historical romp through 1798 Dublin in the marvellous Ionad an Phiarsaigh (Pearse House). A huge hit last year when it premiered in Limerick, Dublin Theatre Festival audiences can look forward to grandeur and grave-robbing, taverns and crypts, at the very least!
Art: Traces at IMMA
Since 2003, exhibiting artists at IMMA have been invited to donate a new or existing print, one which coincides with their show, to the gallery. Traces presents 31 prints from work by Louis LeBrocquy and Dorothy Cross to pieces by Michael Craig-Martin and Alex Katz.
