Pride of the Parish – Fri 15 May at 8.30 p.m. on RTÉ One

To celebrate 125 years of the GAA Pride of the Parish, RTÉ One’s six-part documentary series, will offer snap shots of six very different clubs which will capture the essence of the Association’s unique place within every community in the country. From Galway stars Ollie and Joe Canning in Portumna to Val Andrews’ exploration of the Ballymun Kickhams club, this series shows that no matter how big the star, it is the club and the parish that shape these men and the entire GAA.

In the fifth programme, this time from Cork, All Ireland winning footballer Niall Cahalane whose ambition was nourished in the parish of Castlehaven, is just one of many who drive a three-hour round trip from Cork city several times a week to train and play for this club. From starting out as underdogs, this West Cork club has grown and maintained a place at the top table, winning five of the toughest county titles there is to win and this episode explores the passion and commitment from Niall and so many others to keep the small community going.
