With Daisy’s support, Dan attends the trial of Niall Boylan. When Niall is deemed not guilty for the deaths of Cathy and her baby, Dan is overcome with emotion. He threatens to kill Niall should he ever cross his path again. The following day, Dan is visited by Aideen and Lorna Boylan. When Dan sees that Aideen has been badly beaten, he is outraged and arranges for them to leave for London. Aideen doesn’t want Dan to visit Niall but he cannot resist an opportunity to gloat. He breaks into the Boylan’s where he discovers Niall writhing in agony at the bottom of the stairs with a broken leg. We leave an unsympathetic Dan alone with Niall and pressing down on his injured leg.

Alice is devastated to hear from Lorcan that her friend Sophie is dying from AIDS. Whilst visiting Sophie, Alice discovers from her mother, Janice, that Lorcan is himself HIV positive. Alice’s world collapses; she’s desperate to speak to Lorcan. When she cannot find him, she turns to Dan and his offer of a shoulder to cry on. Dan tells Lorcan that he’s sorry to hear about his illness – he has him over a barrel.

Daisy becomes suspicious of Dan’s anti-wrinkle serum supplier and asks her accountant to check the company’s credentials. Alarm bells start ringing when Daisy discovers that Sinead Kelly, Dan’s former business partner, is a registered director of the company.

Lorcan is glad to have Clodagh to confide in after visiting former girlfriend Sophie, who is dying of AIDS. Sadly the honeymoon period comes to an abrupt end when Clodagh diagnoses a patient with contagious meningococcal septicaemia. The lovebirds are forced to stay apart for the sake of Lorcan’s health.

Patrick discovers bruises on Fergus’s body and insists that he’s checked out. Lorcan thinks that Fergus has been fighting. Patrick confronts Fergus and the truth about his gambling addiction comes out. Patrick says that he will do his best by him but Fergus must cease to fight. Lorcan arranges for Fergus’s scan to be reassessed and tells Patrick that Fergus could be severely brain-damaged by the next blow to his head. Unbeknownst to Patrick, Fergus has no intention of stopping and continues to fight, risking serious brain injury.

Cara can see that Fiona is having difficulty coping with baby Julian on her own and so suggests they move in with her for a while. Fiona is delighted with the idea and readily accepts.
