TUNE INTO BRUCE MORRISION ON RTÉ RADIO 1’S CONVERSATIONS WITH EAMON DUNPHY
This Saturday 1 November at 9.10am former Connecticut Congressman Bruce Morrison is Eamon Dunphy’s guest. Bruce Morrison is best known as the author of the US Immigration Act 1990 which led to 48,000 “Morrison visas” being granted to Irish citizens and an influential figure in the Irish peace process.
He talks about his childhood in Long Island, and his anger on learning at 17 that he had been adopted; his college days with Bill and Hillary Clinton; his interest in human rights which led to his involvement in the Irish peace process, and his support first for Hillary Clinton and now for Obama in his bid for the US presidency.
“I always felt comfortable telling Bill Clinton if you spread the big tent, if you bring them (Sinn Fein) in, you get politics, not violence. He took the risk, and he got a lot of criticism, including criticism from John McCain. And when Barack Obama is getting that same criticism from John McCain about taking risks and negotiating with ‘bad people’ around the world, I think I have the same response, which is to say, if the powerful want change, the powerful have to teach the less powerful that there is a political dividend.”
Sarah Binchy produces Conversations with Eamon Dunphy.
