MCGURK AND COMPANY
Tom McGurk comes face to face, in a series of frank and revealing interviews, with some of the most important thinkers, influencers of public opinion and shapers of Irish life over the past 50 years.
This week’s guest is Cathal O’Shannon. In his wide ranging career he has managed to achieve success in a number of distinctive areas in Irish life – as journalist, television news and current affairs presenter, public relations practitioner and award winning television documentary maker.
In 1972 when Cathal O’ Shannon interviewed one of the greatest sportsmen of the 20th century, the television programme was billed as “Muhammad Ali V Cathal O’ Shannon.” The two professional performers charmed each other and their viewers. When McGurk and O’ Shannon enter the ring in this series, you can be assured an engaging, entertaining and enlightening look back over half a century in broadcasting and public life in Ireland and the fascinating people Cathal O’Shannon met along the way.

DOCUMENTARY ON ONE: THE LONG GOODBYE
Prize Winner at this year’s New York Radio Festival.
Seven years ago May started mislaying her handbag and amounts of money and her husband Matt noticed that she would start to cry during the day. She was diagnosed with depression but after a year and a half, it finally emerged that May had Alzheimer’s disease.
On the verge of his retirement, Matt was now facing a new journey with his wife May, as her carer. The couple moved from their home in London back to her hometown in the Midlands.
As May’s illness has progressed, the couple have swapped roles. Matt has taken over all domestic tasks, a world he never inhabited during the first few decades of their marriage. As her carer and husband, Matt acts as May’s voice and is her rock.
This documentary looks at the relationship between Matt and May, as May’s ability to communicate decreases with progression of the illness while Matt’s responsibilities for her care continue.

PJ O’ CONNOR AWARDS 2008: THINKING AHEAD by Jack Olahan
The third prize-winner in this year’s competition. Thinking Ahead is a comical monologue in which a hypochondriacal couch-potato ruminates contentedly on all his potential ailments.
Jack Olohan started work in theatre while still at school as a production assistant in The Gate and The Abbey Theatres. After graduating with a HND in Film Studies from Ballyfermot College, he went straight back into theatre, mainly as a stage manager / freelance actor. He has worked with Abhann Productions (Riverdance), River Productions (The Wiremen, The Ronnie Drew Show) and many more. In the summer of 2006, his play Bernard Opens Up was produced as part of the Fishamble theatre festival ‘Whereabouts’ and won the Irish Times Special Theatre Award.
Starring Rory Keenan and Emmet Kirwan and produced by Aidan Mathews.

At a time when record stores are closing down due to the popularity of downloading music from the internet Joe Jackson tries to offset that trend by opening on air a virtual vinyl outlet.
Programme 2: Rare Vinyl All The Way. Joe Jackson delves into his personal library of vinyl LPs and tonight plays tracks from blues, gospel and soul albums that have been deleted. Artists included Jimmy Rushing, Mahalia Jackson, Ray Charles and Bobby Bland.

SEASCAPES
Tonight’s Seascapes goes back between 5,000 and 6,000 years to hear of a time when Galway Bay did not exist. The story is told by two Professors from the National University of Ireland in Galway, Michael O’Connell and Conor Newman. It deals with the discovery and now the exhibition of a canoe found in a bog near Barna in County Galway – known as the Barna Bog Boat. It recalls a time when Galwegians of the Neolithic period lived in boggy areas and needed boats to cross them. The Barna bog boat was built from pine and found in 2006. After several years of preservation it has gone on display at the Salthill Aquarium.
