Up for discussion: Oscar-nominated film There Will Be Blood, acclaimed US TV drama The Wire, Second Plane, essays and short stories by Martin Amis and Fool For Love at the Peacock Theatre

Film: There Will Be Blood by Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love)

Nominated for Best Picture, Director and Actor, to name but three of its seven Oscar nods, There Will Be Blood must be one of the most hotly anticipated cinematic releases of 2008 and stars Daniel Day-Lewis as Daniel Plainview, complex oil baron, in a film loosely based on Upton Sinclair’s 1927 novel Oil!

TV: The Wire

Now on the cusp of its fifth and final season, The Wire has acquired a cult following in the US where it broadcasts on cable channel HBO. The acclaimed Baltimore-based detective series examines urban issues such as the war on drugs, the role of media and so on, and stars Irish actor Aiden Gillen in a talented ensemble cast. The new series begins on TG4 in March.

Book: Second Plane by Martin Amis

This controversial new collection of essays and short stories by Martin Amis are all inspired by the 9/11 attacks in 2001 and their aftermath.

Theatre: Fool For Love at the Peacock Theatre

Corn Exchange’s Annie Ryan directs an impressive cast – Andrew Bennett, John Kavanagh, Catherine Walsh and Don Wycherley – in this Sam Shepard classic of dying love in the disappearing wild west from the early 1980s.
