This Monday (28th January), Nationwide comes from the RDS in Dublin where the 2008 Holiday World Show is in full swing. Reporter Paul O’Flynn visits one of the attractions on offer iwhere one centre is offering yoga breaks. These holidays have become increasing popular over the years and this centre is particularly idyllic in the scenic surrounds of the Burren.
Also on Monday, Reporter Helen McInerney goes to Waterford to visit one of the many historic buildings dotted though out the Irish landscape, Waterford Castle. The Castle offers visitors an opportunity to get a sense of what Ireland was like in a by- gone era. It’s also a little different from other historic sites in that it’s located on an island, just minutes from the quays of Waterford City.
On Wednesday (30th January), Nationwide pays a visit to a barber in Monaghan who is instructing young men in the subtleties in the ancient art of shaving, even visiting local schools on the subject. Rowan Hand went along to find out more.
Staying in Monaghan, reporter Niall Martin visits a professional video company who not only shoot weddings and conferences, but now also make DVD’s on local and rural history. The family company make these DVD’s with the help of the Monaghan Veteran & Vintage Club, choosing subjects like the traditional skills of turf cutting, butter churning and póitín making. Niall Martin follows the Murphy family as they gather more local stories of the Olden times.
Also on Wednesday, Nationwide stays in Co. Monaghan to visit one of the first ladies of Irish Country music, Margo. Margo lives in Castleblayney, near the shores of Lake Muckno, and recently she invited Mary Kennedy and the Nationwide team to visit her home just outside the town.
On Friday 1st February, Nationwide visits the Limerick Person of the Year Awards 2007 where 12 local heroes from all walks of life are honoured for their amazing achievements. Reporter Marian Malone went along to sample the excitement and tension of the evening,
Moving to Dublin for Nationwide’s next story, reporter Geraldine Harney pays a visit to the beautiful home of His Excellency, Dr Lucio Savoia, the Italian Ambassador to Ireland. The Lucan residence dates back to the 1770’s and is said to be one of the finest ambassador’s residences in Europe.
Finally on Friday, Nationwide visits the first ever Science Gallery in Ireland, in Trinity College, Dublin. The gallery – the first of its kind in Ireland – will host exhibits on all kinds of scientific topics and aims to encourage debate on science and technology through workshops and events.
