OB SPORT – MON 26th NOV AT 8.30PM ON RTÉ TWO
OB Sport this week presents highlights of all the best Irish action from the 2007 World Boxing Championships in Chicago, USA. Marty Morrissey travelled to the Windy City as, for the first time, the World Games doubled as the main qualifying event for the Olympics. An 11 man strong Irish team ranging in weight from light fly to super heavy were part of a record 693 boxers, from 120 countries, who made up the biggest bill in amateur boxing history.
Belfast native Paddy Barnes, just 20 years old and the lightest man in the squad, was the pride of the Irish. By beating Japan’s Kenji Ohkubo in the Round of 16, making the quarter-finals at the world championships, Barnes became only the third Irish boxer this century to qualify for the Olympics, following in the footsteps of Andy Lee in 2004 and Michael Roche in 2000. In the last 8, however, he faced a very tough competitor – the World and Asian 48kg champion Shiming Zou from China, a man who, pound for pound, is rated to be the second-best amateur boxer in the world.
