No Experience Required – Transition Year is back for a brand new second series. This time around candidates will be given the opportunity to road test careers in journalism, architecture, fashion design, occupational therapy and law.
Three lucky candidates are selected to take part in a three-day trial, and compete to win a week’s work experience placement.
The candidates are tested to the limit, as they discover their true potential and gain valuable advice, which will help them make important decisions about their future careers.
Programme 3: Fashion
Deborah Veale has been a fashion designer for 20 years. From her company’s base in Monkstown, her small team work on up to three collections at a time as well as individual pieces for some of Ireland’s most glamorous celebrities. This week three budding fashion designers are going to battle it out for a work placement at Deborah’s company.
The three wannabe fashionistas are Fiachra O Corragain from Kinsale in Co. Cork, Orla Doyle from Stillorgan in Dublin and Susie Cronin from Macroom in Co. Cork.
Aside from Deborah, the students will also have to impress Charlie Hanrahan, the company director. Charlie deals with the business side of the company, so while Deborah may be looking for creativity in the candidates, Charlie will be looking for some business savvy.
On the first day of the three-day trial Deborah talks the candidates through choosing fabrics, sketching designs, pattern cutting and making sample collections. She then announces the details of their task: Each of them must design a dress, which is both suitable for an Irish awards ceremony and is commercially viable. Due to the short amount of time available, Deborah gives them a design template to work from, however there is still a huge amount of work. In just two days time they will have to present their completed dress to a panel of industry experts.
From mood boards to pattern cutting and last minute alterations, the candidates face immense pressure to bring their designs to life with some help from Deborah’s team.
Who will have what it takes to make it in the fickle world of fashion?
