RTÉ Radio 1 to record public interview with Jeremy Irons at Galway Film Fleadh

In the first of a new series of public interviews for RTÉ Radio 1 broadcaster John Kelly will interview actor Jeremy Irons in the Town Hall Theatre at 4.30pm on Sunday 15 July.  The interview will then be broadcast on RTÉ Radio 1 at 12pm on Friday 20 July.

Irons’ filmography includes ‘The French Lieutenant’s Woman’, ‘Betrayal’, ‘Damage’, ‘Lolita’, ‘Dead Ringers’ and ‘Reversal of Fortune’.  Irons has said that he takes parts that other actors turn down.  His filmography demonstrates an actor eager to excavate repressed parts of the human consciousness: the carnal, the forbidden. Such areas might scare movie stars, but Jeremy Irons is first and foremost an actor.   This dedication to his craft has brought him the Triple Crown or; the Holy Trinity of Acting, The Academy Award, the Golden Globe and The Tony Award.   On television he has won Emmy awards and Golden Globes for his supporting role in the mini series ‘Elizabeth I’. In the theatre he has a Tony award for Tom Stoppard’s ‘The Real Thing’.

John Kelly is from County Fermanagh. After a degree in law at Queen’s University John joined the BBC and went on to win two EMA awards and the prestigious Sony Award for his various music/arts/documentary radio and television programmes with the BBC, UTV and Channel 4.  After twelve long years of all that, he moved to Dublin in 1998 to present the groundbreaking Eclectic Ballroom on what was then called Radio Ireland. He then crossed town to RTÉ Radio 1 to present Mystery Train where he won the PPI Award for Music Broadcaster of the Year. Over the years John has interviewed many of the legends of music – Van Morrison, Lou Reed, Nina Simone, Al Green, Solomon Burke, Sam Phillips, Bono, Brian Wilson, Elvis Costello (a regular co-host of Mystery Train), Rory Gallagher, BB King, Townes Van Zandt, Jimmy Scott, Randy Newman, and many more.

John has also written two novels. The Little Hammer is published by Jonathan Cape as is Sophisticated Boom Boom (April 2003).

Members of the public are invited to attend John Kelly’s public interview with Jeremy Irons at 4.30pm on Sunday 15 July in the Town Hall Theatre, Galway.  Tickets are available at the Town Hall Theatre.
