Breathing Space features six half hour documentaries originally broadcast in 1979. The programmes were filmed at locations which, at that time, were remote and where there was time and space to breathe. This week presenter Fergus O’Gorman hears the folklore and stories told about seals in the west of Ireland and Scotland;
The fifth programme in the series, The People of The Sea, visits the coasts of Donegal, Clare, the Outer Herbrides of Scotland and The Shetlands where Fergus O’Gorman met storytellers who vividly relate some of their favourite folklore about the “Selchies” or seals who are known in the stories as the “People Of The Sea”.
The series is presented by Fergus O’Gorman, who at the time was scientific advisor for national parks. Other programmes in the series let viewers take a trip back in time and enjoy the experience of the great outdoors and join a couple relocating from England in search of the “good life” on Cape Clear.
