RTÉ is pleased to announce the appointment of Tony O’Donoghue to the position of Soccer Correspondent for RTÉ with immediate effect.
In this newly created role, Tony will be reporting on both Domestic and International soccer for RTÉ across its Television, News, Radio and Online platforms. Tony is currently Sports Editor for RTÉ News.
This appointment recognises the importance of soccer and RTÉ’s continued commitment to the sport in Ireland. Tony’s appointment will strengthen RTÉ Sport’s comprehensive coverage, which includes; two nights of Champions League live, the Republic of Ireland’s Euro 2008 qualifying campaign on radio and television, and extensive Eircom League coverage across all platforms.

This new appointment recognises the changing media environment and will enhance RTÉ’s ability to react to soccer stories across a variety of platforms. Tony’s vast experience will ensure we continue RTÉ’s high-standard of unrivalled soccer coverage across all four RTÉ platforms – Online, Television, News and Radio.”
The newly appointed RTÉ Soccer Correspondent, Tony O’Donoghue added “I am relishing the challenge that this new position offers and as a soccer fan myself I am looking forward to getting closer to all the action and bringing it to the fans through a range of different outlets.”
Biography
Tony began his career in RTÉ in the station’s Cork studios moving in 1991 to RTÉ Radio Sport in Dublin. He presented Saturday 2 to 5 and Sunday Sport programmes as well as commentating for RTÉ Radio on Soccer and GAA matches. Tony then moved to RTÉ News and was appointed as their first ever Sports correspondent in 1998. He was later promoted to Sports Editor for RTÉ News and has covered a wide range of sports events including World Cup tournaments, Olympics Games, and European Championships.
Tony is originally from Cork and holds a Degree in Arts and Post Graduate Diploma in Media Studies from UCC.
