ESB Rehab People of the Year Awards*

The Annual ESB Rehab People of the Year Awards will be televised live from Citywest Hotel, Dublin on Saturday 17th September at 9.25pm on RTÉ One.


Gay Byrne will present the programme this year.


There will be a total of eight award winners, including The Greatest Living Irish Entertainer Award, Irish Person of the Year, Young Irish Person of the Year and the International Person of the Year. The presentation to each award winner will be accompanied by a video report of their contribution to Irish life.
 



Previous winners have included Veronica Guerin, Bob Geldof, John Hume, Mo Mowlam, Gordon Wilson, Mary Robinson, Niall Mellon, Peter Canavan and Dermot Weld.

Father Kieran Creagh
For his selfless devotion to people infected with HIV/AIDS in South Africa
and for his tremendous courage in becoming the first volunteer to take part
in trials of an experimental HIV vaccine, Fr Kieran Creagh is this year’s
International Person of the Year.


Jonathan Irwin and the Jack and Jill Foundation
For his determination and tireless commitment to providing support and
assistance to seriously disabled babies and their families through the
organisation set up in the name of his son, Jonathan Irwin is awarded a
People of the Year Award on behalf of the Jack and Jill Foundation.


Emma Synnott
For her immense bravery, her positive attitude and the inspiration she gives
to all around her in overcoming a life-threatening illness, Emma Synnott is
the Young Irish Person of the Year.


Iseult O’Malley, Siobhan Phelan and Peter Ward
For their unstinting dedication to the cause of equal access to justice for
all over many years, Iseult O’Malley, Siobhan Phelan and Peter Ward of the
Free Legal Advice Centres jointly receive an Irish Person of the Year Award.


Sonia O’Sullivan
For her unprecedented achievements in the national and international
sporting arena, for her majestic domination of opponents worldwide over many
years, for the relentless drive, competitive spirit and sheer talent that
made her such a great champion, Sonia O’Sullivan is Ireland’s Greatest
Living Sports Person.


Patrick McAweeney
For his extraordinary act of bravery and endurance in risking his life to
save his drowning friend after they were swept out to sea off the Donegal
coast, Patrick McAweeney is awarded a People of the Year Award.


Reverend Roy Magee
For his unwavering commitment to the cause of peace in Ireland, the Reverend
Roy Magee is awarded a People of the Year Award.
