About Beauty is a new documentary about the challenging and thought-provoking work of conceptual artist, Dorothy Cross, directed by film-maker and photographer, Conor Horgan.

An accomplished diver, Dorothy has an evolving and passionate interest in the sea and its inhabitants, and her art includes many pieces inspired by or made with found objects and sea creatures.

The film follows her as she makes new work on New Ireland, a small island off Papua New Guinea, an island that is one of the last true wildernesses left on Earth. It also features highlights of her other sea-based work, including a behind the scenes look at the creation of the renowned “Ghost Ship” installation, when she moored a luminous lightship in the sea off Dun Laoghaire. This documentary marks the first time the artist has agreed to participate in a film about her work. The film features new music by Michael Fleming of The Jimmy Cake.

About the director

Conor Horgan began directing TV commercials in 1992, and won both Best Director and Best Photographer at the 1993 Irish Advertising Awards. Conor’s short film, The Last Time, was the recipient of many awards, including the UIP Director Award and Best Irish Short at The Cork Film Festival. Subsequent feature-length scripts have been short-listed for the BBC Northern Ireland Tony Doyle award and the Tiernan McBride Script award.

Conor’s recent directing projects include an experimental, Arts Council funded film called Happiness, in which he travelled around Ireland asking hundreds of people what makes them happy and About Beauty. This year he will direct the self-written feature film One Hundred Mornings, followed by Fear, an Arts-Council funded companion piece to the Happiness film.
