RTÉ One is broadcasting the television premiere of the multi-award winning Irish made documentary African Pride on Monday August 29 at 23.35.

Programme Overview

African Pride – Winner of Best Human Rights Documentary at the 26th Galway Film Fleadh and the Green Rose for Best Documentary with a Global Message at the 7th Jaipur International Film Festival, African Pride shares the stories of lesbian women in South Africa’s townships who are meeting homophobic violence with visibility.

South Africa’s Constitution was the first in the world to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. But rights belie the reality for many.

Homophobia has found violent expression in assaults, rape and murders. In South African townships lesbian women are frequently the targets of some of the most brutal of these attacks, their sexuality condemned as un-African, un-Christian and unacceptable.

However there is growing movement of people who are responding to this violence and prejudice by taking to the streets. They hold memorials. They protest. They celebrate Pride in their townships. These demonstrations are noisy, colourful and courageous and they have become impossible to ignore.

Irish film maker and journalist Laura Fletcher explores the stories behind the struggle and meets those who are taking a stand against homophobic violence in their own communities.
