To music buffs, the name Farinelli is probably not too foreign especially if you’re into opera. But who was Farinelli’s teacher? The name Nicola Porpora might be familiar only to students of voice pedagogy or to early music devotees of a certain stripe, but Vlad devotes time today on Vox Nostra to both teacher and pupil – from the music that helped bring this rising star to the pinnacle of opera fame, to works by Porpora himself. There’s also plenty of music from before and after Farinelli, on this Sunday morning full of early music variety.
