Episode 3 FERAL YOUTH

Murder:  Lukasz Rzeszutko (27) was killed in an unprovoked attack as he made his way to work in a fish factory in Coolock on 2nd October 2010. Martin Morgan (19), Stephen Byrne (17) and Edward Byrne (20) had been drinking and in the company of two teenage girls when they decided to give Lukasz `a few slaps’. Morgan proceeded to `dance’ on the victim’s head causing devastating brain injuries. Morgan denied any involvement on arrest however the victim’s blood was found on his runners. He was sentenced to life for murder, Stephen Byrne received 9 years and Edward Byrne received 12 year which was reduced by two on appeal.

Manslaughter:  Paul Manley (26) was fatally stabbed with a screwdriver by Mark Morgan (25) on 20th July 2008 near his home on Moatview Drive, Darndale, Dublin. He had set out that night for a `straightener’ or fist fight after his car –a Honda Integra – was stolen. Paul had already attempted to retrieve his car but was chased by a number of youths with knives. The next night Paul went out for a few drinks when he met them again on the way home. Morgan claimed he fell backwards during the street fight and reached behind to grab a rock but instead found a screwdriver. He then lashed out and stabbed Paul in the head. Morgan had 65 previous convictions, but none for violent offences.  He pleaded guilty and received 7 years for manslaughter.

Murder:  19-year-old David Byrne was lured to his death on 19 March 2011 at Inchicore Dublin, by a number of youths sending text messages pretending to be a girl. When the Drimnagh teenager arrived to meet the girl, he was chased into a dead end in an apartment complex by Marcus Kirwan (17) and three other youths.  Kirwan then stabbed Byrne nine times, once in his face and eight times in his back. Kirwan denied the murder, but a jury found him guilty and he was given the mandatory life sentence on February 4, 2013.

Series Overview:

Since 2014, figures show there has been an increased number of assaults on our streets. The vast majority of these occur between Friday and Monday, a weekend glut of physical assaults, violent robberies and general disregard for the law.  Our nation’s youth are hugely overrepresented when it comes to these violent crimes with 50% of serious assaults being carried out by people under the age of 30.  Youth crime affects everyone in society, but for those it directly touches, it can be devastating. Victims and their families are left to pick up the pieces, but for society at large the question remains – how best to deal with Ireland’s young, dumb and dangerous?

Telling the stories of the perpetrators and their victims with first-hand accounts, expert witnesses, investigating officers, archive and reconstruction, we will provide engaging and shocking accounts of contemporary crimes by and for the target audience. The series is being made with the co-operation of An Garda Síochána and the PSNI and will feature topics including one-punch assaults, ultra-violence and feral youths.
