Series 8, episode 4

EP4 – Alexandra Hollingsworth

Glasnevin Show

In episode four of series eight, Alexandra Hollingsworth is given Richie and Eimear McCann’s back garden in Glasnevin. The brief for Alex is to create a family friendly garden, taking into account the North facing aspect. The period home has a unique history with ‘ferns’ and Alex is charged with honouring the built heritage of St. David’s Terrace.

Alex who is from the United Kingdom, moved to Dublin with her Irish husband Simon who turned up on his days off to help with the design. There is restricted access with no side or rear entrance so all the design materials had to pass through the front door.

Alex’s show is the forth to be broadcast with another one show to follow and a grand finale broadcasting live from Bloom 2016 to reveal the winner of the garden design series.

The garden makeovers are courtesy of the show sponsors; Woodie’s and Cuprinol (Paint Brand – part of Dulux Brand) and are brought to you by RTÉ.

Alexandra Hollingsworth – the budding garden desinger

Alex hails from the small village Hampshire in the United Kingdom. The 29 year old moved to Dublin in October 2014 with her Irish husband, they met through work in London. After spending the last 8 years as a management consultant she decided to take the plunge and start up as a garden designer full time. She is a relatively new comer to this filed and recently took her Horticultural Society exams in February. Alex is also studying for a post-graduate diploma in Garden Design with the Garden Design Academy of Ireland. “This will be the first Garden I have actually designed and built, it’s a real baptism of fire” Alex says.

The Homeowner

Richie and Eimear McCann

When Richie and Eimear moved into their family home in Glasnevin Dublin, they knew that it would take all their savings, and more, to bring the house back to a livable standard. They invested all their time and money into what was once a downtrodden house into a now beautiful home. There they enjoy spending time with their little boy Charlie who is two and a half years old, and very soon to be joined by a new edition to the family.  The young family would love a child friendly garden and a place to entertain in the evenings.

Overview:

SUPER GARDEN returns for a brand new series, featuring five up and coming garden designers who are competing to showcase their garden design talent at this year’s 2016 Bloom Festival.

Each garden designer works on a garden and to the homeowner’s brief. Mindful of their budget, the designer must design a garden with the homeowners’ in mind and to a level befitting the Bloom Festival. All five designers have different location and homeowner challenges to over come on their road to Bloom.

The series follows each designer from the initial concept and design stage, through the reality of the construction process and then the completion of their Super Garden. With just five weeks to design and build a show garden, and a budget of just €5000, the challenges that will face these promising designers unfold throughout the series.

This year the series has a new face and a new role. Previous Super Garden winner, Bloom Gold Medalist and Series Mentor for two years, Leonie Cornelius is taking up the position of Woodie’s Garden Design Ambassador.

‘This year as Judge I would love to find a garden that takes a bit of a risk in terms of design. I’m interested in seeing a garden that has a strong and unique concept and is then carried out to a high standard. I feel the he winning garden has to be one that takes its brief from the homeowners and the site and delivers for them but also uses that brief to create something totally new, exciting and show garden worthy. No easy task!’ – Leonie Cornelius

Leonie’s departure as Series Mentor has created a vacancy for a new Series Mentor and we are delighted to announce, Lecturer and Garden Designer, Monica Alvarez is the new Series Mentor.

The series is sponsored by Woodie’s and Cuprinol.
