Sunday 15th May 2016 at 9am – How to Be an Active Citizen

How to be an Active Citizen: is a six-part series of 30-minute educational radio programmes helping listeners become active citizens in their own lives.
Using real-life examples, online resources, and expert advice, presenter Mary Minihan helps listeners understand how Irish government works, how to gain access to decision-makers and find – and put to use – official information and data.
Episode One is entitled “How to Vote”.
The contributors are Dr Theresa Reidy, of University College Cork, Riona Ni Fhlanghaile, Returning Officer, and Jeanne McDonagh, political campaigner.
Using the case study of a young man who became politically active for the first time via the Marriage Equality referendum campaign, the programme helps listeners understand our Proportional Representation voting system, how every vote counts, and how a political campaign is run.
The series is presented by journalist Mary Minihan and produced by Aileen O’Meara.
The series is funded by the Television licence fee through the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland’s Sound and Vision scheme.
