Scattery Island Cathedral and monastery is an early Christian place of pilgrimage.
Named after St. Senan, the Bishop and confessor who founded the monastery, it lies in the Shannon estuary, 5 km southwest of Kilrush, County Clare, Ireland.
The remains of his oratory, his house, seven rude churches or chapels, together with a round tower and a holy well of some repute, all still survive.
The Irish name Inis Cathaigh was formerly anglicised Iniscathy, which later became Iniscattery and finally Scattery
A populated island in the 1920s, Scattery island is now but a home to wildlife and deserted villiages.
This documentary hears from those who lived on the island. What was life like on the island, and why is it now deserted?
