A series presented by singer Iarla Ó Lionáird which explores the global story of the human voice and asks ‘why do we sing and what happens when we do?’ Episode 1 explores anthropologist Thomas Hylland Eriksen’s idea that ‘to look at the voice is to look at what it means to be human’, while New York vocalist Meredith Monk talks of singing as joining the ‘world vocal family’. Voices include singers Sinéad O’Connor, Peter Gabriel, Frances Black, Polina Shepherd, Nobuntu Mpahlaza, Nomfusi, Julie Fowlis, music director Robert Hollingworth, composer Brian Irvine and ethnomusicologist Jaime Jones.
