At 21, she escaped to the UK, determined to become an actress. While at the RSC, her fellow actors , including Alan Rickman, advised her to forget acting and become a writer. She went on to become one of the UK’s most successful comedy actors, writing and performing with French and Saunders and then starring in a series of celebrity interviews famous for their unique insights and comic moments with Sarah Ferguson, Goldie Hawn, Imelda Marcos and Bette Midler , among others.

But by the end of the 90s, Ruby’ s occasional bouts of depression, came to a crisis. She spent many months in hospital and decided to spend time studying psychology and mental health in order to better understand the problem.

She now speaks regularly on mental health and has performed a comedy stand up routine in mental hospitals as well as in theatres. She shares her hilarious insights into the human condition with Gay Byrne in this episode of The Meaning of Life.
