Nationwide gets in the Christmas spirit this evening with a trip to Waterford for the city’s annual Christmas Festival Winterval, which is now in its fourth year.  The programme takes a look at some of the events and activities for young and old, which are set in unique heritage sites around Ireland’s oldest city.  The team visit the magical Gingerbread Garden, a Reptile Zoo, the spectacular 3D Lightshow, take a trip to Santa’s Grotto in the Medieval Museum and much, much more.

And with Christmas fast approaching, the yuletide songs and carols we all know and love are beginning to be played again on the radio.  A singer songwriter in Waterford who was disappointed not to hear a new song every year, decided to write one himself.  Reporter Damien Tiernan meets Tony Comerford as he tries to find out what ingredients you need to write a Christmas song and what makes some successful while others are not.

On this evening’s programme Marty Morrissey, RTÉ presenter and Clare Person of the Year 2015, brings Mary Kennedy on a tour of his home county.  Beginning in Quilty in the West of Clare, they visit the places that are important to him including the school where he taught, they meet some of the locals and chat to his mother.  We hear about the GAA in the area and also about a massive fundraising concert that Marty organised.

This evening, Nationwide focuses on successful food business in the South West of Ireland.

Cork and Kerry has a very large farming community producing some of the finest foods in the land. This rich agricultural sector has led to the establishment of many successful international food businesses such as the co-ops which are producing great food and many jobs.  In recent years this growth has been added to by many small artisan producers of quality foods.  These small operators have grown from selling at country markets to selling in stores on the high street and some are now exporting.  Tonight, Nationwide looks at  some of these businesses to see what they have to offer and to see what supports are available to them.  The programme visits the Cork and Kerry Food Forum at Cork City Hall for a show case event which aims to promote and celebrate the culinary spirit of both counties.  The City Hall has been transformed into a foodie heaven and on tonight’s programme the team will be giving a sample of what these two counties have to offer in food and drink.
