You Should Really See a Doctor

SERIES OVERVIEW

Not everyone sees the doctor when they should. Some are unwell but don’t know it. Some know they’re unwell but ignore it and do nothing. And still more think they’re unwell and do take action…  by researching their symptoms online, convincing themselves that they are more unwell than they actually are. All of them should really see a doctor.

In this brand new health series Dr Pixie McKenna and Dr Phil Kieran will bring medical help to the nation’s doorsteps by visiting big events across Ireland with their pop-up clinic meeting people with health concerns. They will visit one event in each episode including: The Taste of Cavan, The Tullamore Show, the market at Dun Laoghaire People’s Park, NUI Galway, Lisdoonvarna Matchmaking Festival and the Limerick Show.

Pixie and Phil will meet the invisibly sick, the obviously sick, and the people who think they’re sicker than they really are. They’ll tackle everything from migraines to mysterious rashes. The doctors will face cases of ‘cyberchondria’ where people have googled themselves into health confusion. And they will medically observe and approach people at the event who look like they could have a potential health issue. We’ll follow the stories of several patients as they go on a journey to discover their true diagnosis.

Episode 3 of 6: Galway

In this week’s programme of brand new health series You Should Really See A Doctor Dr Pixie McKenna and Dr Phil Kieran travel to NUI Galway and set up clinic on the busiest day back on campus.

The clinic opens it’s doors to some of the students of NUI who have gone online to self diagnose. Pixie meets Ryan (19) from Mayo who is worried about his stiff neck and tingling fingers.  When he looked online, his research led him to the progressive neurological condition, Multiple Sclerosis. Could he be right?

Phil meets Niall (20) a farmer from Galway who has been living with a very extreme case of a very common condition that has got out of hand. Niall is suffering with severe warts over both his hands. After years of living with them, can Phil help Niall get rid of his warts for good?

Also in the clinic, Pixie meets mum of one Vicky (25) from Mayo who based on her long term symptoms thinks she could have the inflammatory bowel disease – Crohn’s disease.  Will Pixie confirm her diagnosis?

And Phil meets Eileen (25) who comes to the clinic concerned that she will never run again.  Eileen has recently caught the running bug and has run two marathons in her first year. Has Eileen overdone it and done permanent damage to her knee?
