The Geansaí   –    An Corn a Ghlacadh

2 Samhain / November 2015  – RTÉ One @ 19.30

Níl aon rud chomh Gaelach leis an racht áthais a scaoiltear ó imreoirí agus leantóírí araon nuair a séidtear an fheadóg dheiridh ar lá chluichí ceannais na hÉireann.

Some of the most iconic scenes in Irish sport have been witnessed in Croke Park in the moments after the referee blows his full-time whistle to end the All-Ireland Final. The outpouring of joy, relief and ecstasy from players and fans alike is followed by the sight of the winning captain lifting the coveted Sam Maguire or Liam McCarthy cups. But the celebration is never complete until the captain takes a few moments to speak to the faithful.

“Sin an buaic, sin an lá is mó i saol aon imreoir caide agus má tá an pribhléid sin agat is mór an rud é.”   Dara Ó Cinnéide, Captaen Chiarraí i 2004

I ndiaidh don chaptaen an corn a ghlacadh tugann sé óraíd uaidh, ag caint lena mhuintir féin agus ag gabháil buíochas dóibh siúd a chabhraigh leo ar an aistear le barr réime a bhaint amach.

The speeches have evolved over the years from being quite mannerly, short and understated in the 1960s, to the emotional heartfelt speeches of the present day, albeit in more recent years there is also a long list of people to thank!

San eagrán seo de ‘The Geansaí’ caitheann muid súil siar ar chuid de na hóráidi is fearr a tugadh riamh agus na scéalta a bhí taobh thiar dóibh agus fiosraíonn muid cén fáth gur bhreá linn an tradisiún seo agus an tslí go spreagann sé daoine go fóill.

“Bhí a fhios agam cé chomh tábhachtach agus a bhí sé, ní amháin do na himreoirí ach do mhuintir an chondae in Éirinn agus thar lear.”

Pat Fleury, Captean Uíbh Fhailí i 1985

The best speeches are those that reach out to a county and a nation. You didn’t need to be from Clare to appreciate Anthony Daly’s rousing speech when they won their first All-Ireland in 81 years in 1995. And, delivered entirely in Irish, the emotion in Joe Connolly’s voice was clear to all when he spoke of Galway emigrants with tears in their eyes in 1980 as was Páidí Ó Sé’s pride in bringing the cup back to his own people in West Kerry 5 years later.

Many of us have uttered the words ‘Is mór an onóir dom an corn seo a ghlacadh’ at some point in our lives, and the captain’s speech still inspires the youngsters of today. Kilkenny’s Lester Ryan had practised his take on the speech as a 10 year old and when he captained ‘The Cats’ to victory in 2014 he decided to deliver his speech ‘as Gaeilge’

This final episode of ‘The Geansaí’ relives those iconic moments when the winning captain made his speech.  With contributions from former winning captains Anthony Daly, Dara Ó Cinnéide, Pat Fleury and Lester Ryan as well as Joe McDonagh, Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh, Micheál Ó Sé and Alan Titley.
