In February 1951 Proinsias Ó Conluain and Radio Éireann Sound Engineer Dermot Maguire from travelled to the Glenhull area of Co Tyrone in the Sperrin Mountains to record the last native speakers of Irish in the area.   In this programme today, we will learn about the visit from excerpts from the diary that Ó Conluain kept, describing customs, attitudes to the Irish language, analysis of the dialect, and more.  We’ll also hear correspondence between Ó Conluain and Michael J Murphy from the Irish Folklore Commission, and analysis by Dr. Heinrich Wagner of the dialect.  See programme webpage for images from the visit.  Reader Brian Mullen.  Presenter/Producer: Ian Lee.
